Biography of Dr. John Butler

Dr. John Butler’s music career started in the late eighties with WAJJI Records of Washington, DC. His music style covers traditional, inspirational, contemporary, and quartet gospel music, Jazz, and R&B. observing how the industry was not designed to offer the artist lifelong security, Dr. Butler decided to stay independent and in 1995 he left is engineering career and started his own record label, Mylestone Records, Inc. In the same year he started Next Level Publishing Company.          

Between 1995 and 2009, Dr. Butler recorded 120 compositions, with 91 written by him. To date, many of his compositions have been copyrighted and published with the Performance Rights Organization (an Broadcasting Music Inc. (BMI) affiliate). In 2010 Dr. Butler recorded 86 songs out of a planned 100. A CD is due to be released in April 2011. He has traveled the U.S. and abroad performing and recently completed a four year tour (45 weeks a year) with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Additionally, Dr. Butler ministers at churches and religious events throughout the United States as well as at his home church, The Heritage Fellowship Church in Herndon, VA where Dr. Norman Tate is Senior Pastor.

An Ordained minister, Dr. John Butler is a TV Host, Author, Mentor, Recording Artist, Entrepreneur and a former Pastor of Living Faith Christian Fellowship in Springfield, VA. He is a graduate of Christian Bible College, New Orleans, LA, Liberty University of Lynchburg, VA and now holds a Doctorate of Religious Theology from Universal Ministries School of Theology. He is the recipient of a Golden Eagle Five Star Award for authoring a DVD entitled: “ So You Wanna Be a Music Star”-Volume I.

Dr. Butler is a 2006 Grammy nominee and was named Musician Atlas Magazine’s 2008 Inspirational Artist of the Year. In 2010 he received three nominations in inspirational and urban contemporary music categories from the Washington Area Music Association. Dr. Butler is fondly and widely referred to as THE MINISTER.

Here's a little bit more of the inside-scoop on Dr. Butler

The Beginning of his career:

His music career started in the late eighties with WAJJI Records of Washington D.C. The contract lasted for 3 years and 2 albums.  All traditional gospel.  John Butler, needed to see for himself if he had what it took to make it with a music career, by enter 38 talent shows.  He won 37 talent shows in a row, and was disqualified from the 38th talent show at Lisner auditorium, because of his professional status around town.

He then, later traveled to New York and met with Polygram, Mercury and several other major record labels.  Having the talent to proceed.  Two of the labels offered contracts, but John Butler refused to sign after realizing that he would be locked in a three year deal, that would keep him under contract for seven years after the artist to label project obligations were completed.  Furthermore, the signing bonus of $100,000 was only a loan with 300% interest, and no opportunity for ownership.

The Growing Years:

Observing how the industry was not designed to offer the artist lifelong security, John Butler decided to stay independent and in 1995, he left his engineering career and he started his on record label Mylestone Records, Inc.  In the same year, he started Next Level Publishing Company.  He than continued to write songs, copyright and register with the Performance Rights Organization (BMI).  Between 1995 and 2009, he has recorded 130 compositions, with 91 written by him.  He has traveled the U.S. and abroad performing, and has recently completed a four year, 45 weeks a year tour, with Army and Air force Exchange Service.

20 Years Later, and He's Still Going Strong:

At this present time, Dr. John Butler is spending time mentoring and producing other artist projects, as well as, working on recording 100 songs in 2010, with the mindset to complete 300 career recordings, and 150 videos. It is a HALL of FAME run.  His personally belief is to pursue, and press toward the prize of the mark.
